| Show and Tell |
The first day of your child's school week is now 'show and tell' day. On this day, children may bring an item to show or tell about during circle time. Please do not send "toys" such as Pokemon, Barbies, etc. It is more valuable educationally to send an artifact of nature or something that your child has made or found. |
| Tuition Late Fee |
Because we are trying to be good stewards of your tuition dollar, we charge a $15.00 late fee for all checks that come in after the 15th of the month without prior arrangement. We're sure that you agree that the time spent tracking down late checks can be better used in your child's classroom.

| Portraits |
As a reminder, Sparrow Portraits will be taking portraits of your children on Wednesday, October 8. You will have a chance to view the pictures BEFORE you buy. Then you will be able to choose sheets of 1 8x10 or 2 5x7s or 4 4x5s, etc. The cost is quite reasonable and the portraits will be back in plenty of time for holiday gift giving. If you wish, you may bring siblings and have all of your children photographed together as well as individually. Pictures are digital and can be view via your email. |
| Sign Language |
As you may have heard, we have started our weekly sign language lessons (Tuesdays for Ms. Zweber's classes and Fridays for Mrs. Marsh's classes). At circle time on sign language day we learn a few words and practice them in songs or games. We encourage the children to use the signs they know in the classroom and we sign to them as well. Each month we will list the words that your child has learned. We encourage you to use the Sign Language Browser link below to look up these words so you can learn them along with your child. Enjoy!

A Brief History of Casa dei Bambini
Here's a picture of my friend Cristina and me in Rome at Maria Montessori's first school - Casa dei Bambini. It was quite an (unexpected) emotional and wonderfully special experience for us to be here. I love the laundry hanging out of the 2nd story apartment! Life goes on, doesn't it?
This building was built as a way of providing housing for underprivileged people. At one time there were 10,000 people living here, in what was the start, and failure, of a previous building attempt - basically a skeleton of 6 would-be palatial houses. The new builders chose 1,000 (mostly married) people to live in their very basic apartments. One room was set aside as a way of confining the wild and uncivilized slum children before they would cause damage to the building while their parents were at work. (Can you imagine leaving your 3 year old to fend for himself while you're at work??) It was hoped that a person would be found with enough 'social courage' to tackle the problem. This, of course, turned out to be Dr. Maria Montessori, who was a physician and the Medical Officer of Hygiene at that time. She approached the project from a scientific point of view and her educational method grew out of her observations of the 50 children entrusted to her in this place, Casa dei Bambini.
